Richard Powers

Richard has been teaching historic and contemporary social dance for over 35 years.  He leads workshops around the world and is currently a full-time instructor at Stanford University's Dance Division.

Historic Social Dance

Richard has researched social dances from the past five centuries, with an emphasis on 19th and early 20th century social dance. Richard coined the term "vintage dance" in 1981.

Today's Social Dance

Richard's emphasis is on flexible attentive partnering, creativity, developing one's personal style, and the ability to adapt to the dancing styles of various partners.
